Description
The Railway Inn is a public house dating from the 1860s, located on East Street in Torquay. The building is constructed of stuccoed walls with a slate roof and rendered chimney shafts. It is designed in an Italianate style.
The main three-bay elevation to East Street features pilasters, with the ground floor rusticated, and a first-floor platband. Four-pane sash windows with horizontal glazing bars are present on the first floor, each with plain, eared architraves. Two round-headed doorways are centrally located, featuring pilasters, moulded architraves, key blocks and simple fanlights. A tripartite sash window is positioned on the right-hand bay, with a plain architrave. A transomed two-light bar window is located to the left, featuring a floating cornice on slender, moulded brackets. The glass is etched with 'The Railway Hotel'. A round-headed doorway is within a canted corner to the left, with pilasters, a moulded architrave and a key block, above which sits a four-pane sash window with horizontal glazing bars. The canted corner to the right features a round-headed ground-floor window with pilasters, a moulded architrave and a key block, above which sits a matching sash window. The other elevations are simpler but retain their original windows. The interior has not been inspected, but may contain features of interest.
