Description
This monument, located approximately 30 meters west of the Berry Head Hotel, was built between 1834 and 1847. It is made of Devonian limestone ashlar and features a square pedestal with a chamfered plinth, panelled sides, and a flat projecting cap. The north side of the monument has an inscription that reads "TO THE UNKNOWN DEAD." It stands in the front garden of Berry Head House, which was occupied by the Reverend Henry Francis Lyte, the author of the hymn "Abide with Me," during the same period. According to Gregory, Lyte erected the monument after discovering human bones while leveling a mound of earth for gardening. The monument, or a similar structure, appears on the Brixham tithe map of 1838.
