Description
The Duke of Clarence tablet on New Pier in Brixham commemorates the visit of the Duke of Clarence, who later became William IV, on 21 July 1823. It is made of Devonian limestone framed in hollow-moulded red brick and is set into the wall at the rear of the New Pier. The current tablet is a metal plate that was installed in the 1970s and features what appears to be a verbatim copy of the original inscription. A small portion of the original Devonian limestone is still visible behind the plate, indicating that the original tablet remains. The 1970s plate incorrectly states the date as 1828, while White's 1850 directory confirms it as 1823.
