Description

No. 1 Blatchcombe Road is a villa, currently used as an institution, dating from around 1840 with later 19th-century alterations. The building is rendered and features a slate roof with stacks that have rendered shafts and platbands. It is situated on a corner site between Southfield and Blatchcombe Road, elevated above Southfield Road, and has an approximately rectangular plan.

The exterior is two storeys high with a single-storey block. The Blatchcombe Road elevation displays an asymmetrical front with a 1:2 window arrangement, plus one window in the single-storey section to the left. There is a one-bay entrance block that projects slightly forward on the left, featuring a moulded cornice at the first-floor level and a wide panelled front door. To the right, the front includes one ground-floor sash window with one over one panes, a first-floor 19th-century twelve-pane sash, and a 20th-century window inserted alongside. Further to the right, the front breaks forward again, showcasing two first-floor 12-pane 19th-century sashes and a three-light ground-floor ribbon window with margin panes. The single-storey block at the left end has a cornice below the parapet and a sash window.

On the Southfield Road elevation, there are two 19th-century ground-floor high-transomed small-pane casements with margin panes, along with two similar first-floor windows without transoms. An attic dormer is glazed with a casement, and there is a four-pane sash window with a moulded cornice in the single-storey block to the right. A conservatory with a finial on the gable and a crested ridge is attached at the left end and projects to the front. The interior has not been inspected but may retain features of interest.
