Description
Myrtle Cottage is a house and adjoining carriage house with origins dating back to the early 17th century or earlier, which was refronted in the 1830s. The building is finished in stucco and has a slate roof that is gabled at both ends. It features two rear lateral stacks, one made of red breccia rubble and the other of brick, both topped with old chimney pots.
The main block of the house has a two-room plan, with both rooms heated by the rear lateral stacks. The exterior is two storeys high with a symmetrical 1:2-window front. Notable features include attractive local red breccia steps with two bootscrapers leading to an early 19th-century central porch. This porch has reeded Doric columns, an entablature on the sides, and a pedimented gable at the front. The rear of the porch has reeded pilasters, and the doorcase includes panelled reveals and a six-panel front door with glazed top panels and an overlight with glazing bars.
The windows are 20th-century timber, with two on each floor; the ground-floor windows have transoms. The carriage house to the left is slightly set forward and has a catslide roof, with a pair of timber garage doors and a 20th-century timber window above. The rear elevation, featuring the lateral stacks, indicates an earlier core. The interior has not been inspected but is likely to contain features of interest, possibly including an earlier roof structure.
