Description

A row of five linked pairs of semi-detached cottages, originally built around 1889 for coastguards, is situated on Berry Head Road in Brixham. The cottages are constructed from squared, rough-faced Devonian limestone rubble, with slate roofs. Each pair has a stone chimney on the end wall, built with matching masonry and featuring dressed limestone entablatures. The cottages are typically one room wide and two rooms deep, with a shared entrance porch centrally located within each pair. Low, single-storeyed outbuildings with flat roofs connect each pair of cottages to one another and to the adjacent Coastguard Station. Number 26 has a late 20th-century extension to the left. The cottages are two-storeys high, with a uniform appearance in most cases, except that numbers 26 and 28 exhibit six windows wide instead of the usual four. Gabled entrance porches are topped with chamfered copings and kneelers, with a quatrefoil panel in the gable and a small triple-arched panel at the apex. Plank doors are fitted with wreath-knockers at numbers 18, 26, 28, and 30. Windows are flat-headed, with dressed stone surrounds, and have 6-paned sashes at numbers 14 and 16, 22 (upper sashes only), 26 (ground storey only), and 28-32. Other cottages have plain sashes, though number 24 has an aluminium-framed casement, and number 26 has wood-framed windows in the upper storey. Porch windows consist of small 4-paned wood casements, except at numbers 20 and 24. A low stone wall with a chamfered limestone coping and an iron railing featuring simple pointed uprights runs along the front of the cottages. Matching gates are present at numbers 14-20 and 24.
