Description

A terrace of seven houses built around the 1870s in Torquay. The houses are constructed of stucco and have slate roofs with sprocketed eaves, topped with stacks featuring rendered shafts, cornices, and platbands. The layout is of a terrace with the end houses slightly different in design, arranged as double-depth houses, mostly two rooms wide.

The exterior is three storeys high. Each house has a double-fronted design, typically with a three-window front. The roofs have deep sprocketed eaves, and a platband runs along the first floor. Dividing pilaster strips are present, with rustication on the ground floor, sunk panels on the first floor, and moulded brackets at the party walls. Each house has a pilastered, moulded, round-headed doorway with a vermiculated keyblock, leading to a four-panel door and plain fanlight. The outer windows on both floors are tripartite sashes with sill blocks; the ground-floor windows have floating cornices on brackets, while the second-floor windows feature moulded architraves and segmental heads. The first-floor centre window is similar, but not tripartite. There are three segmental-headed dormers with moulded cornices, all with four-pane sashes, the dormers themselves having segmental-headed sashes. All windows are glazed with four-pane sashes with horizontal glazing bars except the dormers. The end terrace houses are of a T-plan, with a porch situated in the angle between the main block and a wing. One of the houses, number 6, is distinct, with the left-hand bay gabled to the front and slightly broken forward. The interior remains uninspected but may retain features of interest. The terrace is considered a fine example of an unspoiled stuccoed terrace of modestly-sized houses in Torquay.
