Description

The gun battery, located approximately 10 meters west of The Battery, is a structure from the 1830s, built after 1832. Originally a military installation, it has since been converted into a cottage and garage. The building features a timber frame that is now covered with vertical planks and has a hipped felted roof. It is a small oblong structure positioned on a cliff edge with views of the sea, designed to accommodate three cannons, with a store or shelter at each end.

The building is single-storey, with visible hinges for three large pairs of double doors, although only the right-hand door remains. This door is made of vertical planking and has strap-hinges. A smaller door on the right side also survives and is similar in construction. The right section has had garage doors added, while the left side features a late 20th-century glazed door and two windows for the cottage.

On the seaward side, the large timber uprights of the gun-ports can be seen from the outside. Inside, only the garage has been inspected, revealing large timber posts that support tie-beams. The roof consists of common rafters with collars attached to each pair. The original plank floor includes an iron ring for securing the gun. In front of the building, there is a pavement made of granite slabs and another iron ring. Additionally, the foundations of another battery, which also has an iron ring, are visible in the garden to the west. This second battery is likely the Shoalstone Point Battery, constructed following Colonel Birch's report to the Board of Ordnance in 1832. The gun battery now stands in the garden of a 20th-century bungalow called The Battery.
