Description

This milestone, dating from the late 18th century or early 19th century, is located on Marlborough Road in Chiseldon. It features a rounded face and a curved top that is indented in the center. The milestone has a severely defaced inscription indicating distances: Swindon 2 miles, Hungerford 14 miles, and London 79 miles, along with other illegible inscriptions. It is noted in Richard Jefferies' 1884 work, 'The Life of the Fields'; Jefferies was a writer and naturalist born in 1848 at Coate, near Swindon.
