Description
The Coate Water Diving Platform is an Art Deco style structure built in 1935, designed by Swindon Borough Surveyor JBL Thompson, and constructed in accordance with the regulations of the Federation Internationale de Natation Amateur (FINA).
Made from reinforced steel and concrete, the diving platform features a curved, forward-leaning tower that houses a central stair leading to five diving platforms of varying sizes, shapes, and thicknesses, with their measurements documented in a booklet from the year of its opening. This design allows for the use of both spring boards and fixed boards. The top platform includes a flagpole, and originally, each platform was surrounded by plain, tubular shaped metal railings. Following its closure, to prevent vandalism and unauthorized access, the arches at the base of the diving tower have been partially filled with concrete blocks, and the lowest platform has been fitted with a concrete block parapet.
