Description

The group of four chest tombs belonging to the Iles family is located in the churchyard, 9 meters west of the west door of the Church of St. Mary in Lydiard Park. The tombs are arranged in a row from north to south.

The first tomb is made of limestone and features a moulded top with a reeded fascia and recessed corner balusters. The side panels are designed in the form of an incised funerary lamp, commemorating John and Elizabeth Iles, who died in 1820 and 1822 respectively, along with their daughter Mary.

The second tomb, also of limestone, has a moulded table, recessed corner balusters, and a cavetto base, though the inscriptions are not visible.

The third tomb is similar to the second, but the inscriptions are not accessible.

The fourth tomb, again made of limestone, features a moulded table, recessed corner balusters, and inscriptions in cartouches with putti at the corners. This tomb commemorates Catherine Iles, who died in 1797, and William Iles, who died in 1747, suggesting it may be the oldest of the group.
