Description

In the south corner of the churchyard at the Church of St. Mary in Lydiard Park, there is a group of six chest tombs arranged in three rows.

In the east row, from north to south, the first tomb is for John Matthews, dated 1832, made of limestone with a hipped and moulded top and recessed corner balusters. The second tomb is similar, but the inscription is not clearly legible.

In the centre row, the first tomb is also made of limestone, featuring a moulded table and recessed corner balusters, with an inscription within a raised oval panel for John Matthews, 1802, and Catherine. The second tomb in this row is similar but has plain sides with light relief carving, commemorating William Matthews, 1774.

In the west row, the first tomb is for Jane Plummer, née Saunders, 1854, and Edward Plummer, memorialized in 1894, and is of the same form as the first tomb in the east row. The last tomb is for Stephen Matthews, 1845, and is also in the same style as the first tomb in the east row.
