Description

Jesmond House is a two and a half storey building dating from 1721. It is constructed of red brick and features chamfered stone quoins, a stone plinth, and tripled stone keys. The building has stone bands above the ground and first floors, a stone coping to the parapet, and ramped gables. It is adorned with wood modillion cornices and has four bays with glazing bar sashes set in moulded frames. The stone slate roof includes four gabled dormers, and the gable end brick chimneys have stone base bands. A high parapet with a lattice of stone is positioned before the dormers. The door case is located in the second bay from the left and features enriched Doric fluted pilasters, a Doric frieze, and a pediment, along with an eight-panel front door. There is a wrought and cast iron bracket at the front and a stone balustrade that curves into the doorway with lattice panels. At the rear, there are two storey wings, with the north wing featuring a mansard roof and a west gable end with moulded hoods over the windows, while the south wing is made of brick. Additionally, there is a mid-19th century coach house constructed of brick and rubble with a cobbled entrance. Inside, the house boasts a good wooden staircase with a sweeping rail and two turned balusters per tread, as well as panelling in the hall and in the front room to the north, which includes a contemporary fireplace and flanking arched niches.
