Description
Roman Road Bridge is a 19th-century structure faced in quarry-faced Swindon Portland stone, which is squared and coursed. The parapets were rebuilt using purple engineering brick, and the soffits were refaced in the same material, with limited patching of the faces.
The bridge has a skew angle of 25 degrees and features a semi-circular arch with a standard span of 30 feet (9 meters). The arch's voussoirs spring almost from the base of the abutments. Broad piers flank the arch, which were originally treated as pilasters. However, the moulded cornice that formed most elements of the capitals and ran the width of each face was replaced with a plain string course during the parapet reconstruction, resulting in the loss of the key stones and tablet motifs. The faces continue as straight wing walls on either side of the piers. There are several irregularly placed tie rods with various styles of tie plates on both faces. The parapets end with piers that are expressed only on the external face and feature a low plinth on their inside face. The coping is made of shallow-pitch poured concrete.
When the Roman Road Bridge was built, it was situated in open countryside, but it is now surrounded by the suburban development of Swindon New Town.
