Description
The Church of St Margaret is a Grade I listed building dating from the 13th century. It features a four-bay aisled nave with a concealed clerestory and a low two-stage 19th-century west tower. The chancel, which has three bays, includes vestries on the north side. The structure is built of rubble and topped with a stone tile roof. There are several early 14th-century cusped-headed two-light windows, along with some copies. A plain round-headed doorway on the north side, which has impost bands, appears to be 12th-century but is likely a 17th-century addition. The church has a projecting gabled south porch that includes a small stair to the west and a waggon roof with a ridge rib.
Inside, the church features round piers with wide moulded imposts that are carved with dog-tooth patterns, supporting pointed double chamfer arcades. There are two-light clerestory windows, with two on the south and three on the north. The east window has three lights and a reticulated design. The north side has trefoil rere-arches, while the south side features depressed pointed rere-arches. The south aisle chapel contains a trefoil piscina and a trefoil-headed squint, likely restored in the 19th century. On the north side, there are two cusped ogee-headed tomb niches adorned with palm trees forming crockets and flanked by crocketted pinnacles, with the wall thickened to the outside. The chancel roof is a false hammerbeam design, while the nave roof is moulded and panelled. A 17th-century memorial to Katharine Hedges, who died in 1649, is located in the southwest corner; it is made of marble and features swagged sides, a segment moulded cap, and a carved cartouche in baroque style. There are also two hatchments.
The graveyard to the south is well-stocked, particularly noted for its numerous 18th-century headstones with relief carvings and several chest tombs.
