Description
The Church of St John Baptist is an Anglican parish church located in Frenchay, built in 1834 by H. Rumley. The tower was restored in 1923 by Hartland Thomas. The church is constructed from rubble with freestone detailing and has a slate roof. It features a west tower, a galleried nave, a chancel, a north porch, and a south vestry.
The two-stage tower is supported by heavy, weathered diagonal buttresses and has a heavily moulded pointed door with angel corbels. Above the door is a two-light Decorated window, a clock beneath a label, and single lights on the sides with a cusped oculus at the top. The tower is topped with a battlemented parapet and an octagonal spire. The five-bay nave is also battlemented, with tall buttresses and windows that have plain Y-tracery below and Decorated tracery above. The north porch is gabled and buttressed, while the narrower gabled chancel features a four-light Decorated window on the east side.
Inside, the church has a galleried interior with tall wave and shaft piers that rise to almost round arches and ribbed plaster vaults. The chancel arch is moulded, and the sanctuary has a plaster vaulted ceiling.
