Description
The Church of St Anne is a Grade II listed building located in Oldland Bottom. The original medieval chapel was demolished in 1827, and the current structure was designed by the Fosters of Bristol, built between 1829 and 1830. It is constructed from pennant stone rubble with an ashlar plinth, quoins, and square-corner piers that have offsets at the top. The building features coped verges with saddlestones and block stones at the eaves, topped with a slate roof.
Notably, there is a gargoyle in the north-west corner of the transept that may be a reused medieval piece. The church has a three-bay nave, one-bay transepts with pointed arch doors, and a one-bay chancel with an angled sanctuary. The windows include original church-warden "Y" tracery and later decorated style tracery from probably the mid-19th century, along with rose windows on the north, south, and west sides. A projection on the south-east side may indicate the retention of medieval fabric, possibly a roof-stair projection. There is also a later western porch and a corbelled belfry on the west gable, with a vestry located to the north-east.
Inside, the church features a Tudor arch plaster vault with thin reeded ribs, and the fittings are from the later Victorian and modern periods.
