Description
The Avon and Gloucestershire Tramway features retaining walls and a junction with the California Incline, along with a causeway and bridge over Siston Brook, located near Cherry Garden Lane. Opened in 1832, with the California Junction established in 1869, this impressive embankment is made of pennant stone and stretches about 200 yards long. The California Incline Railway intersects this structure at an angle and consists of a raised causeway approximately 20 feet high, which is buttressed on the south side and crosses Siston Brook via a plain arch. The parapet of the causeway includes a soldier course. The tramway was closed in 1904 and is significant for its remains, which include wharfs near Londonderry Farm and Avonside.
