Description

No. 8 High Street is a building with origins dating back to the late 16th century, which has been altered in the 17th and 18th centuries. The exterior is rendered and features a pantile roof with 19th-century brick stacks. The structure is two storeys high and has three windows, which are 4-light casements with chamfered mullions. The ground floor on the right side has a transom. At the south end, there is a 3-bay wooden portico with carved columns and a frieze that shelters two doors. To the right, there is a studded plank door with strap hinges, set in a scroll-moulded and stopped frame. To the left, there is a fixed door with a cambered head and an ovolo moulded frame, along with a decorative panel beneath it. The north wall features a projecting stack with offsets.

Inside, the building formerly had a cross passage, which has now been removed, with a hall and parlour to the right and possibly an unheated room to the left. The south room contains a 5-inch stop-chamfered beam. The door to the hall has an inserted 18th-century board head with an elliptical arch and a carved keystone. The hall includes a fireplace with chamfered stone jambs and an adjoining plain spice cupboard. The beams in the hall have double ogee moulding. A panelled screen with moulded surrounds divides the hall from the parlour, which features a frame ceiling made up of nine panels formed by a chamfered beam. There is a winder stair with a late 17th-century balustrade, chamfered beams upstairs, and a tie beam truss roof. The building also has a rear wing that dates from the 18th or 19th century.
