Description
The Swan is a building with origins dating back to the mid-17th century, which was remodeled and extended in the mid to late 18th century. The exterior is rendered, and it features a pantile roof behind a parapet that is topped with a decorative cast iron balustrade and pineapple finials on the end pilasters. The building stands three storeys tall and has three windows with modern glazing bar sashes, along with bays on the ground floor. The central entrance has a wide segmental headed doorway, framed by a Doric porch that displays a large cast swan above it.
Inside, the layout was formerly centered around an open court. The south and west wings retain 17th-century features, including a 3-light chamfered mullion window and stop-chamfered beams in the south wing. There is also a studded plank door with strap hinges located in the rear wing at the first floor. The exterior showcases three plaster panels that depict a rampant horse (possibly a unicorn), a lion and unicorn with a crowned thistle and rose above, and another lion.
