Description
The structure consists of piers, statues, and gates located about 21 metres north of Old Down House. This Italian baroque feature was imported in the early 20th century and is made of limestone and wrought iron, extending approximately 20 metres in length. The central pair of gate piers has a square plan and is intricately carved on the south face with grotesque masks and twined ribbons, along with a cornice and plinth. Each of these piers is topped with a statue of a putto draped in fabric and holding a cornucopia. The gates are made of wrought iron. There are five similar piers on each side, each topped with a bowl of fruit, all constructed from reconstituted limestone, except for the piers on the right and left, which are topped with fluted urns. A wrought iron screen is positioned between each pier.
