Description

The Post Office is a house and shop dating from the 18th century, with early 19th-century alterations. It is constructed of rubble and rendered, featuring a slate mansard roof with pantiles to the north and a brick stack also to the north. The building stands 2½ storeys high and has one window. The west elevation includes a double shop front with a central panelled and glass door that has a transom light above. This is flanked by reeded pilasters and a cornice, with multi-pane windows on each side. There is a wrought iron grille in the stall riser to the left. On the first floor, there is a 16-pane sash window with stepped voussoirs and a wrought iron balconette. The dormer features a pair of horizontally sliding sashes, each with 4 panes. The elevation is further enhanced by corner pilasters, a cornice, a parapet, and coping. The south elevation is rendered to resemble ashlar on a rubble plinth and has two windows, all 16-pane sashes with painted voussoirs. There is a central round-headed recess on the first floor with impost blocks and a keystone, along with a central 6-panelled and fielded door, a fanlight, and radial glazing bars, supported by pilasters and topped with an open triangular pediment on brackets. The interior has not been inspected. This building is part of an important group located at a crossroads.
