Description

The White Hart is an inn with origins dating back to the 15th century, which was remodeled in the 17th century using materials from the tower of the Church of St. Mary. The building has undergone later alterations and additions. It is constructed of rubble, rendered at the rear, with pantiled roofs and double Roman tiles on the rear, porch, and south block, featuring gable stacks. The structure is L-shaped, with a former through passage, and stands 2½ storeys tall, accompanied by a 2-storey wing to the left and a gabled wing projecting to the right.

The front elevation has a window arrangement of 1:1:2. The ground floor includes a 20th-century bay window, a 3-light casement with a timber lintel and 20th-century shutters, a porch with a pitched roof, a 20th-century outer door, and an inner door with a moulded frame. To the right, there is another 3-light casement. The first floor features a 3-light casement with a timber lintel, a sash window in an exposed box, and two similar sashes to the right, along with two blocked windows in the gable.

The north elevation has three windows; the ground floor has two 3-light casements and a central 2-light casement with a loop catch, while the first floor has sashes with thick glazing bars and exposed boxes, with the central sash blocked. The lower wing to the right has a straight joint between it and the main structure, featuring one window, a 3-light casement on both the ground and first floors, with a decorative loop catch and an iron stanchion at the first floor. There is a plank door in a plain frame to the right, and the ground floor openings have timber lintels.

Attached to the south is a block of two storeys with three windows, all sashes. The second bay from the left has a cart entry leading to a courtyard, with a plank door in a plain frame to the right. Inside, the building features deep chamfered and stopped beams, plank and batten doors, deep splayed reveals to the windows, and a winder stair at the rear of the passage leading to the attic. The White Hart is part of an important group at a crossroads.
