Description
The Keeper Monument is a chest tomb located in the churchyard, 22 metres south of the tower of the Church of St James the Less. It dates from the late 18th century and is made of freestone. The tomb features a moulded slab with recessed corner balusters adorned with swags, plain ends, and one inscribed end. The sides have inscriptions within cartouches and decorated spandrels, along with a moulded base. The inscription on the north side reads: "In Memory of JOHN Keeper of this Parish who died April 1st 1799 Aged 65 years. The voice of innocent Abel's blood, err'd loud For JUSTICE on Cain who by the law was dead But O may the blood of our Lord cry more loud For MERCY on my guilty murderer's head."
