Description
Hanham War Memorial is a stone structure dating from around 1920, with the architect unknown.
The memorial is set on a square platform approximately 2.4 meters across. It features a Celtic cross on a roughly-hewn square base, situated on a wide platform that is partly grassed. The lower part of the cross shaft has the inscription "TO / THE GLORY / OF GOD." The front face of the base is inscribed with "AND IN GRATEFUL MEMORY OF ALL THOSE / WHO GAVE THEIR LIVES IN THE CAUSE OF FREEDOM / IN THE GREAT WAR. 1914 – 1918," followed by the names of 69 men who fell in the conflict, all presented in a Serif font. At the foot of the base, within the grassed area, there is a matching stone tablet inscribed with "1939 REMEMBER THEM AND THOSE WHO / WEPT 1945," below which are the names of 26 men who died during the Second World War.
