Description

Frith Farmhouse and Bakehouse is a late 17th-century farmhouse, possibly incorporating an earlier building, located on the north side of Frith Lane in Yate. The structure is built of rubble with a plain tiled roof and rubble stacks, forming an L-plan layout. It has two storeys, a cellar, and attics in stone gables, with a facade featuring two projecting bays and a canted two-storey and attic porch with a hipped roof. The windows include 19th-century sash windows with marginal glazing bars and 20th-century casement windows that resemble sashes, most of which are set under a cornice. The west gable has cross windows, and there is a central 20th-century door.

To the southeast, a single-storey rubble bakehouse projects from the main building. Inside, the hall, parlour, and dairy fireplaces are made of neatly coursed rubble and are segmental in shape. The interior features stop-chamfered beams, doors, and hall with bolection moulded surrounds, while the passage and dairy doors have ovolo moulded surrounds. A notable feature is the fine dog-leg staircase with panelled newel posts, twisted balusters, carved pendants, and finials. The first floor includes 17th-century panelling from the hall that forms a passage, with chamfered door frames. The attic contains reused members and extended collar beam trusses, along with a decorative panel featuring a rose and four fleur-de-lys within a lozenge on the stack. This farmhouse is a distinguished, albeit somewhat altered, example of a high-class gabled vernacular or gentry house, originally built for a surgeon who never occupied it.
