Description

Castle Farmhouse is an early 18th-century farmhouse, with possible late 17th-century origins. It was converted for municipal use and subsequently dated “G.C.C./ 1880” on a plaque. The farmhouse is constructed of coursed rubble with slate roofs, concealed behind a tall parapet featuring inset ashlar panels and a moulded projecting cornice. The building is arranged over three storeys and is composed of a 2:3:2 bay design, with the central three bays slightly advanced and topped by a pediment containing the date plaque. The windows are glazing bar sashes, some with thick bars and glass from the early 18th century. Eight-pane sashes are found in the central bays, set within exposed boxes and under thin dripmoulds. A central 20th-century door leads to a projecting porch supported by plain uprights. The north gable end incorporates Venetian windows, while the rear stair tower has cross windows. Inside, moulded beams are visible on the ground and first floors of the north rooms. A staircase with an open string, turned and twisted balusters, and a panelled dado serves the building. Some rooms retain panelling.
