Description
Mudgedown Farmhouse is a mid-17th century farmhouse constructed of rubble with plain concrete tiles. It has a T-plan layout with a central passage and has been extended. The building stands 2½ storeys tall, featuring an attic with three gables and three windows, which include 2, 3, and 4-light casements with ovolo-moulded mullions; the 4-light windows have king mullions and are set under plain label moulds. A central two-storey gabled porch projects from the front, with windows on all sides at the first floor that are now blocked. The heavily moulded door frame has a Tudor arch and contains a later door, while a studded front door is set within a similar frame and features ornate stops. The rear elevation and wing mirror the gabled front, with a 20th-century porch on the north side and a large lean-to extension on the south. The south end has a gable stack and two cross windows. Inside, many original door frames remain, all ovolo-moulded with various highly decorated stops. The interior also features chamfered and ovolo-moulded beams and a fireplace lintel. An open well staircase at the back of the passage has been altered and may have had its balusters stripped, now presenting with plain rails below a grip handrail and above a decorated string. The attic contains extended collar trusses.
