Description
The walls to East Court are constructed of pennant rubble stone set in red loam and tightly bonded. The enclosure is sub-rectangular, measuring approximately 51 meters from west to east and 38 meters from north to south. The gateway in the east wall, along with its flanking walls, is separately listed at Grade I. The later buildings along the west end of the south wall are not of special interest.
The east wall and part of the north wall were rebuilt in the mid- to late 18th century, with the north wall being aligned slightly differently. There were further phases of rebuilding during the 19th century. A mid-16th century gateway has been inserted into the east wall of the court, which may represent the relocated original entrance from the south court.
