Description
No 1 High Street is a late 17th-century building that was remodelled in the early to mid-18th century. It is a notable example of English provincial baroque architecture, constructed from painted Bath stone. The building has a concealed roof behind a moulded stone cornice, with the top moulding rising to form a central pediment against the parapet. It stands three storeys tall with a basement and features three windows that are glazing bar sashes set in moulded stone architraves. There is a cornice above the ground floor windows and a moulded string course above the first floor windows, with the moulding raised to create segmental pediments. The corners of the building have raised chamfered quoins.
The front of the building includes a Tuscan portico with a pediment. The side elevation, made of rubble, retains quoins and blocked oculi from the original 17th-century house, while the rest features glazing bar sash windows. This building is an important feature of the townscape, marking the closure of the upper end of High Street.
