Description
Slab is a Grade II listed building that embodies William Champion's brass foundry, dating back to 1743. It is a roughly oblong block constructed of rubble, featuring black slag quoins on the south side and a hipped pantile roof. The building has three storeys and four windows, with small pane fixed lights set in brick-lined openings that have cambered heads. On the ground floor, there are three plain doors, one of which is double. The second bay from the right on the upper floor includes a hoist opening that rises above the eaves level into a gabled dormer.
The clock tower, which breaks forward to the left, rises to ridge level and has a gabled pantile roof of the saddleback type, along with black slag quoins. This tower may have originally served as an annealing oven. The upper floor contains an 18th-century bell and clock with an octagonal external dial. There is a boarded-up cambered head opening on the first floor and a plain door on the ground floor. The building is linked to a three-storey, one-window structure to the west, which also features black slag quoins, with the lower part constructed of black slag ashlar and moulded corners at the west.
