Description
The Sign of the Dolphin is a farmhouse that has been converted into a house. It dates from the late 17th century, with 18th-century additions on both the left and right sides, and 20th-century alterations. The building is constructed of pennant rubble with limestone dressings and features a plain tiled roof with gable stacks.
The front of the house is symmetrical, standing 2½ storeys high with four windows. The ground floor has four 2-light casements with wide ovolo mullions and a continuous hood mould. There is a central 20th-century door set in a heavy bolection-moulded stone surround, topped with a flat wooden hood supported by brackets. The first floor also has four similar 2-light casements with a continuous hood mould, and a central keyed oval bull's eye window in a rectangular surround. The two gables rise to the ridge height, each featuring a similar 2-light casement and hood mould, with stone rainwater chutes directing water from the gutters to the right, left, and center.
There are single-storey additions on both the right and left sides, each containing two similar 2-light casements under the eaves, with inner windows that were formerly doors. All windows have 20th-century leaded lights. The right return has a 20th-century window with a timber lintel at the gable end of the addition, and a timber member remains at the first-floor level of the main house. The left return features a 20th-century 2-light casement at the gable end of the addition, along with a single light with a hood mould in the attic.
At the rear, there is a single-storey flat-roofed 20th-century addition along the ground floor, with a single light to the left and center, and a 2-light casement to the right with a hood mould. The rear also has two gables similar to those at the front, each with a 2-light casement and hood mould, and similar rainwater chutes. A single-storey former stable is attached to the left, featuring two doors and an open-fronted garage. The interior has not been inspected.
