Description
This building, located on the west side of High Street in Thornbury, has origins in the 16th century, with significant alterations and extensions occurring in the late 18th and early 19th centuries. It is arranged in an L-shape. The section of the building parallel to the road has a timber frame and is rendered (covered with a smooth material adhered to the frame). It features a pantile roof. The building is two stories high, with the first floor projecting outwards, supported by wooden brackets. The east-facing elevation includes a four-light king mullion casement window, a chamfered mullion casement, a glazing bar sash window, and a modern picture window, all on the ground floor. The north gable wall displays an elaborate 19th-century bargeboard, a glazing bar sash window on the first floor, and an early 19th-century door and picture window on the ground floor. A rear wing, facing north, was constructed in the early 19th century, with a rendered facade mimicking the appearance of ashlar stone, and a pantile roof. It is three stories high and contains a single window with sixteen panes. A six-panel door is located on the left side.
The interior reveals wind bracing in the roof, exposed timber framing, large chamfered beams, and stop-chamfered spine beams with run-out stops.
The building is a prominent feature of the townscape, marking the southern end of the wider section of High Street.
