Description
28 High Street is a late 15th century to early 16th century building that has been altered in the 18th and 19th centuries. It is constructed of coursed rubble, featuring alternating Pennant sandstone and limestone, and has a double Roman tiled roof. The building has two storeys and a low, coped gable. There is one window with 2-light casements that have slightly chamfered stone mullions. Above the ground floor window, there is evidence of a former coach entry. The entrance features a six-panel door with a flat hood supported by stone brackets.
Inside, the building has an arch-braced collar roof with windbracing that extends along the entire length of the roof, visible in the first-floor room closest to the street. There are two well-crafted heavily moulded ashlar fireplaces, one on the ground floor (with the lintel removed) and another on the first floor that has a depressed arch lintel. The first floor also includes a segmental-headed doorcase where a dividing screen once stood.
This building is part of an important group of gabled houses alongside Nos 24 and 26.
