Description

The Godwin Monument in the Churchyard of St Thomas à Becket, Pucklechurch

The Godwin monument stands in the churchyard of St Thomas à Becket, approximately 22 metres south of the nave. It is an early 19th-century chest tomb in Regency Gothic style, erected to commemorate William Godwin (died 1801) and other members of the Godwin family.

The monument is constructed of sandstone. It features a flat top with an eared moulded edge and a moulded plinth. The corners project slightly and are marked by pilasters consisting of paired pointed-arched recesses with trefoil heads, surmounted by a rosette frieze. The south face contains two recessed, trefoil-headed inscription panels set within round-headed arches, with a small shield positioned in the spandrel between the arches.

The monument has been designated at Grade II as a good example of an early 19th-century chest tomb in Regency Gothic style, and for its group value in relation to the Grade I-listed church and other listed tombs in the churchyard.
