Description
The boundary stone at Northfield is a historic marker that may date back to the Anglo-Saxon period or even earlier, although it has been re-set. This large upright stone, made of limestone or conglomerate, stands approximately 1.25 meters high and measures up to 500 millimeters wide and 300 millimeters thick, tapering to a peak. The surface of the stone is notably pitted. It features a bronze plate with an inscription stating: "THIS MARKER STONE BELIEVED TO BE OF ANGLO-SAXON AND PROBABLY PREHISTORIC ORIGIN STANDS IN THE VICINITY OF THE ANCIENT BOUNDARY OF THE BERKELEY HUNDRED AND THE LANGLEY AND SWYNESHEAD HUNDRED." The stone was recovered from beneath the highway and was reinstated in its current position by Avon County Council in 1984.
