Description

Algars Mill is a house, originally a mill, with late medieval origins, substantially altered in the 17th, 19th, and 20th centuries. It is constructed of rubble with a plain clay tile roof. The building is two and three storeys high, featuring five irregular windows – all 2 and 3-light casements dating to the 19th and 20th centuries. A 20th-century glazed porch fronts the building, with a stable door to the right. A corner is chamfered and corbelled out to the first floor. The roof is slightly lower to the left, over the two-storey section, and the end gable shows evidence of a raising of the roof. A later lean-to extension and a gabled dormer are located at the rear. The interior to the left contains chamfered spine beams with run-out stops, while the right side features heavy chamfered beams marked by machinery. A late 19th-century turbine remains in working order, situated in a mill race that still passes below the building on the right.
