Description

The War Memorial is a monument in the form of a wheel cross with flared arms, positioned above a finely-carved moulded collar. It stands on a tapering hexagonal shaft, which is set on a three-tiered base featuring mouldings and offsets. The entire structure is approximately 5 meters high and is placed on a platform of three steps. The upper section of the base is inscribed with the words "TO THE / GLORY OF / GOD" on the principal face, while the other faces are blank. Below this, the base bears the inscription "AND IN PROUD AND / LOVING MEMORY OF / THE MEN OF / HAWKESBURY / WHO DIED FOR ENGLAND / 1914-1918," along with the names of 32 individuals who fell in World War One. The principal face of the lowest part of the base is inscribed with "1939-1945," and the flanking faces list the names of those who died in World War Two.

Surrounding the memorial is a wall made of rubble stone, which is brought to course and encloses a hexagonal area. The walls feature moulded copings, and the corner piers have pyramidal caps. The space between the memorial platform and the wall is paved. At the entrance to the enclosure, there is a wrought-iron gate that carries the inscription "LEST WE FORGET." Adjacent to the gate is a plaque that reads "REMEMBERED / WITH GRATITUDE / 50 YEARS ON / 1995."
