Description
Numbers 154 and 156 are a pair of town houses built in the late 18th century. They feature stuccoed fronts, with rubble on the right-hand side and slate hanging on the first floor of the rear wing. The houses have a steep dry slate roof with four hipped dormers set behind a plain parapet, and each house has a brick end stack on the left. The layout is double-depth, with front rooms in the center and entrance halls on the left and right.
The exterior consists of two storeys plus an attic, with each house having a three-window range. Number 156 has original hornless sash windows with glazing bars, while Number 154 has later horned sashes. Both houses retain their original doorways, which feature fluted pilasters and open pediments above blind spoked fanlights, along with panelled doors and reveals. There is also a tall stair sash with glazing bars on the right-hand return.
The interior has not been inspected but is likely to be of interest. In front of Number 154, there are rubble walls and dressed stone steps flanked by wrought-iron railings. This pair is part of a planned late Georgian street laid out in 1773. Number 156 is reputed to have been the home of Hardy, who was present at the death of Lord Nelson at the Battle of Trafalgar.
