Description

This is a pair of shops, likely dating from the late 18th century, located on the Barbican in Plymouth. The building is constructed of brick with a quoin strip on the left side and dressed Plymouth limestone quoins on the right. It has a steep slate roof concealed behind a plain parapet, with a hipped roof on the right side. Tall brick stacks are located at the left end and at the rear right.

The building is four stories high with a three-window front. It features original or early 19th-century 12-pane hornless sash windows, along with later paired 4-pane sashes to the centre. Painted panels on the middle floor and the parapet display the lettering "SOUTH WESTERN RECEIVING OFFICE FOR GOODS AND PARCELS TO ALL PARTS".

The ground floor is dominated by a full-width moulded entablature with consoles above two early 19th-century pilastered shopfronts. The left-hand shopfront is largely intact but the windows are blocked. The other shopfront has small panes of glass, and a similar window is incorporated into the right-hand return.

The interior has not been inspected but may be of interest.
