Description

No. 27 New Street is a group of warehouses built around a courtyard, dating from the late 18th century to the early 19th century. The walls are made of Plymouth limestone rubble, with segmental brick arches over most openings, and the roofs are mostly slate, featuring half-hipped and gable-ended designs. The warehouses surround a courtyard that is accessed through a carriageway opening in the front warehouse.

The exterior consists of four storeys, with the courtyard elevation of the front warehouse displaying a two-window range and former loading doorways on the right. The warehouse on the left side of the courtyard has a similar front but with loading doorways positioned towards the left. The front of the rear warehouse is partly clad in weatherboard, while the front of the warehouse on the right side of the courtyard features three large round-arched openings on the ground floor, with a blind wall above.

Inside the front warehouse, there are original beam and joist floor structures, and it is likely that the original roof structure is still intact, although it has not been inspected. The other warehouses have not been inspected but are also likely to retain their original structural features. New Street is notable for containing a high proportion of fine 17th and 18th-century houses, along with some impressive warehouses.
