Description

This warehouse, dated 1809 and bearing the inscription "AG Werninck, Palace Vaults," is located on New Street in Plymouth's Barbican area. It is constructed from Plymouth limestone rubble with segmental stone arches over the openings, and has a corrugated asbestos roof. The building has a gable end facing the street and a deep plan.

The symmetrical front facade has two windows above a ground floor that has been altered with a 20th-century shopfront. The shopfront features a large central window with glazing bars and a panelled door flanked by pilasters on either side. The left-hand return displays a ten-window range with three ground-floor doorways and central loading doorways. The building rises four stories plus an attic.

The interior was remodelled in the 1970s and 1980s. The warehouse is situated within New Street, an area notable for its concentration of 17th and 18th century houses and warehouses.
