Description
No. 35 New Street is a merchant's house located in the Barbican area of Plymouth. It dates back to the 17th century but has undergone significant alterations since then. The house features a steep dry slate roof, which has a shallower pitch over a later rear outshut. At the rear, there is a tall brick lateral stack. The building has a one-room plan with a later addition at the back and stands three storeys high. The front has a two-window range with 20th-century 12-pane horned sash windows. Above the ground floor, there is a fascia, and the ground floor includes an original heavily-moulded oak doorway with restored carved and octagonal stops on the left, which is attached to the more ornate doorway of No. 34. There is also a sash window to the right of the centre. The rear of the house shares a gable with No. 34 and features a smaller gabled dormer on the outshut, with sash windows that have glazing bars.
Inside, the house has been altered in the 20th century but still retains old panelled doors, and there may be some original structural features of interest that are not visible. New Street is known for having a high proportion of fine 17th and 18th-century houses.
