Description

37 and 38 New Street are two merchant's houses dating from the 17th century, with the front having been remodeled later. The exterior features a stuccoed front with moulded cornices above slight jetties, a steep dry slate roof behind a parapet, two dormer windows, a rendered end stack on the left, and two large rubble lateral stacks over the original rear wall, along with a large rubble end stack off-centre to the rear right-hand wing. The plan is single-depth, with two rear gabled stair towers and two narrow wings.

The houses are three storeys plus an attic, with a two-to-one window arrangement featuring 20th-century horned sashes with glazing bars. No. 37, on the left, retains an original three-light ovolo-moulded window with two surviving mullions and a partly-glazed door on either side.

Inside, both houses contain original pole staircases. No. 37 has a 17th-century moulded beam in the cellar, an ovolo-moulded doorframe to the front first-floor room, a corner cupboard with missing doors, an old planked door, and two 19th-century iron grates. No. 38 features a 17th-century ovolo-moulded doorframe, some 18th-century ceiling joists, a rough-hewn beam in the cobbled basement, a fine 18th-century glazed corner cupboard with an elliptical arch, and a 19th-century chimneypiece with consoles. The roof structure has not been inspected but is likely to be of interest. New Street is known for its high proportion of fine 17th and 18th-century houses.
