Description

No. 12, The Barbican is a merchant's house, dating from the mid-to-late 18th century, and now used as shops and flats. The building is constructed of painted brick with rusticated stucco quoins and mid-floor bands, topped by a concrete tile roof with two late 19th-century dormers featuring paired sash windows. Brick end stacks and a cast-iron ogee gutter are also present. The plan is deep, and the building is symmetrical with a five-window front. The windows are 20th-century replacements, styled as 12-pane hornless sashes. The ground floor retains elements of a good pilastered shopfront. This incorporates a central house doorway with an open pediment and a modillion cornice, linked to a similar entablature above the altered 20th-century shopfronts, the one on the left featuring a central doorway, while the other has a doorway on its left. The original house doorway has fluted pilasters with two-tier carved consoles, and a four-pane overlight above a six-panel door. The door itself has flush bottom panels and fielded panels above. A tall staircase window is visible at the rear. The interior has not been inspected, but is likely to contain features of interest.
