Description

Winson House is a large town house dating from the mid- to late 18th century. It is situated on Church Road in Plympton St Maurice, Plymouth. The building is constructed of polychrome rubble walls with segmental brick arches, and it has a slate roof with a modillion eaves cornice and rendered end stacks. The floor plan has a shallow depth, with two rooms flanking a central entrance and stair hall.

The front of the house is symmetrical, with a three-window arrangement over three storeys. The first floor probably originally featured 12-pane hornless sash windows, with paired sashes on the left and right, and later horned sashes including tripartite sashes with glazing bars to the wide ground-floor openings. A central doorway has a fluted pilastered doorcase, a moulded entablature, a three-pane overlight and a six-panel door with fielded panels.

The interior retains numerous original features, including a dog-leg staircase with turned balusters over a closed string, dado panelling in the entrance hall, a six-panel door on the left, two-panel doors to the second floor, and visible tie-beam roof structure.
