Description
Seagate House, also known as Building Number 8 of the Royal Marine Barracks, is a detached house located on Durnford Street in Stonehouse, Plymouth. It was built between 1850 and 1860 and is now part of the Marines barracks. The building features stuccoed walls and a dry slate roof that is hidden behind a coped parapet, which has an overmoulded cornice that continues as a string course under the coped gable at the front. There is a tall brick lateral stack on the left side and a hip-roofed wing at the rear.
The exterior is two storeys high with a front that has a 2:1 window arrangement, a gable over the left-hand bays, and a slightly projecting entrance bay to the right. The windows are set under segmental arches and include sashes with glazing bars, a round arch to a small gable window, and a round-arched window above the entrance. The round-arched doorway features a large fanlight above a glazed door with margin lights.
Although the interior has not been inspected, it is expected to be of interest. This building was constructed for the surgeon during a time when the Longroom was used as the barracks hospital and is paired with the Assistant Surgeon's House, now known as Emma's Cottage. Seagate House is part of an important and complete barracks complex.
