Description
Emma's Cottage, also known as Building Number 9, is a detached house located within the Royal Marine Barracks on Durnford Street in Stonehouse, Plymouth. It was built around 1861 and designed by Colonel G. Greene, who was the Director of the Admiralty Works Department. The building features stuccoed walls and a dry slate hipped roof that is set behind a parapet with a moulded cornice. There are rendered axial stacks and a flat roof on the rear wing.
The exterior of the cottage is two storeys high and has a three-window range with sash windows that include glazing bars and stone sills. A central wooden porch, which has a moulded cornice, is flanked by glazed sides and a door. The interior has not been inspected but is expected to be of interest.
A notable feature of the property is the high rubble garden wall on the side of the house. Historically, this building served as the Assistant Surgeon's house during a period when the Longroom was used as a hospital. It was constructed as part of the 1860s extension of the 18th-century barracks and is an important component of a complete barracks complex.
