Description
This is a circa early 19th century terraced house, remodelled around the mid 19th century. The house is stuccoed with a slate roof and a rendered chimney stack. It is a double-depth terraced house with one room at the front and an entrance hall to the left. A courtyard is located at the rear, featuring statuary friezes along its sides.
The south east front has three storeys and a basement, with a two-window frontage. It features moulded window architraves, round arches to the ground floor, bands, a moulded cornice to the parapet, and replaced casement windows with glazing bars. A Doric portico is located on the left, now enclosed. The rear, facing northwest, has a large extension on the right with one sash window on the first floor; the other windows have been replaced.
The interior remains largely intact and complete, retaining original joinery including an open-well, open-string, stick-baluster staircase with a moulded mahogany handrail, panelled doors, window shutters, cupboards, chimneypieces, and ceiling cornices.
The rear courtyard contains a remarkable collection of statuary friezes. These consist of large, life-size figures in relief sculptures lining the courtyard walls, standing in deep relief from the walls. The sculptures are made of cement and reinforced with iron armatures, and depict figures of various nationalities and periods, including Egyptian, Classical, and Biblical themes, alongside a Roman soldier, an Albanian, English/American gentlemen, a deer, and a camel. The friezes are believed to have been documented in deeds from 1834, although details about their origins are scarce, with the house having reportedly been occupied by the Italian consulate in the late 19th century.
