Description

Devonport High School for Boys is a former military hospital built in 1797, with some later extensions. The building features a front made of Plymouth limestone ashlar, while the rest is constructed from Plymouth limestone rubble, with an ashlar plinth and dressed surrounds to the openings. The roofs are dry slate hipped, and there are dressed stone stacks with moulded cornices.

The layout consists of a large plan with four original square ward blocks connected by an arcaded and vaulted walkway at the front, which extends to the right to join an administration block that is partially a later addition. The exterior includes three-storey ward and administration blocks, each ward block having five-window-range elevations, along with various single-storey and two-storey additions. The group is complemented by a single-storey passage and balcony featuring a layout of 5:7:5:7:5:7:1:5 bays. The arcade includes a plinth and impost string, topped by a moulded entablature with a turned balustrade above each round arch. The windows from the 20th century have glazing bars and are set within dressed stone architraves, with spoked fanlight heads above the round-arched doorways of the ward blocks in the passage. The rear part of the administration block features 12-pane horned sash windows.

The interior does not have any particular features of interest where inspected. This building is significant as a hospital design, arranged in separate blocks similar to the Royal Naval Hospital on High Street, with the structures aligned in a straight line behind a long and visually striking colonnade.
